The mighty Columbia - WA. On October 18, 1805, the Corps saw their first Chinook Indian canoe and were very impressed with its strong, yet lightweight construction. They traded one of their dugout canoes and some trinkets for one. It would be ideal for the portages ahead. The curious Indians visited the expedition's campsites and were amazed by Pvt. Pierre Cruzatte and his violin.
